Apart from mastercard, Naira Visa card and verve card are the two other debit cards issued by Nigerian banks. The verve card is handled by Interswitch Company.

Some of the similarities that both debit cards have in common:
• They are both issued by Nigerian bank
• Both debit cards make use of Naira as it’s currency
• Both debit cards can be used in any of the ATM in Nigeria

Some of the major differences between the two Debit cards widely used in Nigeria

• Ownership: Verve debit card is owned by a Nigerian company Interswitch and most of the company’s operations are limited to Nigeria for now while the visa cards is owned and issued by a foreign company. Visa is based in the United States.

• Online Transaction: when it comes to online transactions, it is mostly Nigerian based websites that recognizes and accepts payments made with verve cards, foreign sites do not accept payments from a verve debit card. While Visa is more popular and can be used to make payments on most foreign sites as these sites recognize and accept visa cards. The only change will be that for each payment you make, with visa card on a foreign site the naira in the visa card will be converted to its dollar equivalent since most transactions are dollar based.

• Safety: in as much as the verve card comes with a chip and PIN that guarantees it safe and free from hacking there are some cases where you hear that a person’s account was hacked with a verve card when it comes to safety; visa card is believed to be more secure than verve card.

if that is the case, verve card should not have the same charge with visa. verve should be cheaper than visa. again people should be sensitised on the difference between the two cards so as to guide them appropriately to making their choice while applying for the card. for me now, the bank prepared verve card for me without even allowing me to apply and make my choice.
